1. It’s 130 Years Old

The competition works so well that it is one of the oldest in history. The first one was held in 1883, but now it’s more popular than ever before with tickets becoming as rare as competitions that are 130 years old.

2. The Trophy Is Worth It

The blood? The sweat? The tears? All for what? A £55,000 trophy, that’s what. The impressive prize is made of sterling silver and would pack a punch on the Antiques Road Show.

3. England Win, Overall

England holds the most Grand Slam wins with 12 full sweep victories. Although, Wales come a close second place with 10 famous victories in the tournament. With this in mind, the next Grand Slam for either will be all the more important.

4. An Age Old Rivalry

There’s a tournament within a tournament, which makes the whole thing even more exciting. The Calcutta Cup is fought out between Scotland and England each year and, get this, it is EVEN OLDER than the main event. It began in 1872 when rugby made its way to India. As a result, the trophy is made up of 50,000 rupees.

5. The Most Tries Ever Scored Is…

29 by, you guessed it, England. The try-fest was in 2011 and led England to victory. However, they did not win the Grand Slam as they lost one game against a competitive Ireland. Sometimes you can’t have it all.
