The Best Dog Breeds for a City Flatshare

Dogs are a necessity of life that no one – even those flat-sharing in the big city – should have to go without! But as hard of they try, some bow-wows will always be better than others at adapting to life in the concrete jungle.

So if you live somewhere urban and you’re thinking of adopting a canine baby this year, consider making your pupper one of these puppers: they’re all breeds that are slightly more atuned to city life (and we don’t mean they prefer flat whites and independent cinema).

  1. Boston Terrier

Boston terrier

The Boston terrier is the dog from Feast, meaning we’ll love it forever. But it’s also named after a city – a Blue’s clue that it’s a good urban pooch. It’s a good size for even a one bedroom apartment (though maybe not a single room London studio) and has a manageable coat. Generally well-behaved and happy in the spotlight, this is very much a ‘take it to work in the studio’ dog.

  1. Whippet

Whippet

The whippet is a great city dog, but especially if someone in your flatshare has people in most of the day: freelancers, students, retiree, etc. They have short coats which won’t make a mess, and as long as they get their daily run-around, they’re notoriously quiet, sleepy and cuddly!

  1. King Charles Spaniel

King Charles spaniel

A lapdog fit for the King of England is a lapdog fit for your flatshare! Royal court life has produced a dog that is equally happy living a life of lazy luxury as it is accompanying you on your hunting exhibitions around Regent’s Park. Just make sure you brush its lovely coat often – not that you wouldn’t want to. It’s so silky!

  1. Chihuahua

Chihuahua

This celeb-favourite comes in a number of breeds – including a few that don’t look like scraggly Brazilian rats! They are a bit spoilt and needy – but that makes them the perfect dog breed for the city flatshare. They like to keep warm inside, they’re tiny, so need little space, and they’re happy being carried everywhere if you ever need to bring them on the tube!

  1. Miniature Shorthaired Dachshund

Miniature Shorthaired Dachshund

Shorthair, don’t care (for cleaning up hair all the time, that is). The miniature will take up very little of your precious city flat, but it will fill it with joy and cuteness. Just make sure you train your sausage dog not to climb on furniture – its long back could get damaged if it tries a little city parkour!
