“Show us your Tates!” shout the ignorant tourists, lusty for London’s artistic plunder. “Turner me on!” they bay, in Barbican barbarism, or in their hoards in the RA and National Gallery.
Don’t they know there’s a subtler side to art in the capital? Don’t they see something has gone haywire if you’ve only visited the Hayward? Here are London’s best small, obscure or less-visited galleries.
Doomed
Doomed Gallery is an exhibition room in Dalston that is especially renowned for exhibiting excellent photography. With a DIY ethos, Doomed like to get involved in the local scene and help give an audience to artists in the city. That means that if you are an arty sort looking for flats to rent in Dalston, you might want to look near Doomed.
Marian Goodman
This is the London gallery of the celebrated New York gallerist of the same name. Marian Goodman Gallery is found near Golden Square in Soho. The next exhibition to show is a collection of new work from Jeff Wall. Catch it from 30th October.
Kenwood House
For many people Kenwood House is the point at which they eat their sandwiches and turn around to walk the dog back down through Hampstead Heath. These people are missing out on a fantastic Art Fund collection inside. Featuring works from Vermeer, Gainsborough and Turner, Harwood House would be a great place to live. If they ever put any rooms to rent we’ll let you know…
Lazarides
In Fitzrovia, that enviable part of town that marries cool with cash, Lazarides is a gallery that is famous for championing urban art and is a must-see for street art connoisseurs. If you love to collect prints, Lazarides Editions produce high quality prints with artists from across the globe.
Dulwich Picture Gallery
Admittedly the most well-known of all the above galleries, Dulwich Picture Gallery is still somewhere decidedly off the central London tourist trail. An incredible Escher exhibition is opening 14th October, running until 17th January of next year so don’t miss out. You have been warned.
The many areas of London ensure that all types of people can find rooms to rent that are right for them. If you love art and indie galleries, we think you’d find success looking for a flat to rent in Dalston.
