Leicester
Why?
If, in 2013, you told the people of Leicester that finding the long-lost remains of King Richard III wouldn’t be the biggest party it was having this decade, they would have laughed at you. One Premier League title later, and Leicester has become a town reinvigorated and full of contagious optimism.
How’s the rent?
Pretty cheap! Our records show the average rent for a room in Leicester in 2015 was only £368pcm. That leaves you plenty of spare change to buy a season ticket at the King Power Stadium and go around the Richard III museum!
Bristol
Why?
Aside from being one giant hill, Bristol is a cool place to live right now. Proud local people with a strong southern (but not London-influenced) identity make this a thriving city, with a love for cycling, cider and music. So much music. Every café and pub has an open mic. Plus you’re near the beach and beautiful Bath is closer than Hackney is to Wimbledon!
How’s the rent?
On the more expensive side at £479pcm for a room, but compared to other southern hipster haunts like Brighton (£528pcm), it looks like a steal! You should have no trouble affording the occasional Julio Bashmore gig and accompanying bottle of scrumpy.
Winchester
Why?
The name of a thousand English pubs, Winchester was named Britain’s best place to live by the Sunday Times this year. Yes – I know. The Sunday Times’ idea of a great place to live isn’t exactly universal, but Winchester has some amazing tourist attractions (e.g. the cathedral – Europe’s longest), a mere 0.6% unemployment rate and is set in seriously beautiful countryside. 
How’s the Rent?
OK – not great at £446pcm per room in 2015. But only an hour from London by train, it looks pretty good when compared with prices in the capital. Besides, many properties here are beautiful period things that are a joy to live in!
