In this pared back Church Street restaurant you can sit on little stools while you enjoy the best (and probably only, let’s be honest) Xinjiang province food you’ve ever tasted. You can get whole dishes for around £3 and come away feeling far too full for less than a tenner. Perfect.
Sky, Chinatown, Newcastle
Right in the middle of Newcastle’s bustling Chinatown is Sky. They cleverly have three menus. If you’re feeling timid, stick to the English menu, but for such a special occasion, we recommend the Hong Kong menu, which specialises in incredible noodle soups.
Bar Shu, Chinatown, London
If you want to get the new year off with a bang, Barshu is the place for you. It serves Sichuan cuisine and is known for its fiery hot pallet. With fireworks setting off in your mouth, this is not for the feint-hearted, but it is an excellent place for those who can handle it. Be sure to order plenty of Tsingtao beer!
Tattu, Chinatown, Manchester
If you’re in Manchester this February, be sure to eat at Tattu. During the celebratory period, every diner will get a New Year’s gift! With a stunning interior, this sophisticated restaurant takes Chinese food a little more upmarket, showing there’s so much more to it that red hot broths and umami noodles. Try as much as you can from the Dim Sum menu!
Chung Ying, Birmingham
The oldest of a cluster of great Chinese restaurants in Birmingham’s city centre, Chung Ying is one of the most popular diners in Brum. You can get a big, delicious set menu serving here for less than £15. It’s the perfect introduction to the breadth of Cantonese cuisine.
