5 creative gardening tips for London house shares

While old bins and jugs are the most obvious options for DIY planting containers, people have also been known to use old sinks, toys and foraged shells to create arragements of smaller plants. The strangest but best plenters we’ve seen are made from old shoes. We like them.

  1. A palett for herbs

If you’re the flatmate that likes to impress with culinary delights, you should 100% try this next task. Using an upturned, wooden palette, you can create layers of horizontal herb planters with ease. Simply line each level with lanscaping fabric and staple it to the wood, then fill with soil a delicious herbs. Don’t forget the mint to perk-up your summer Pimms.

  1. Lighten up

Jam jars should always live on after the jam is gone, so never let roomies throw them away. They’re ideal for brightening up your outdoor space. Keep the lids and pierce them, pushing a fairy light into each jar for a string of jazzy lights. Alternatively, use them as candle holders to keep the evening midgis away.

  1. Hot all year round

Believe it or not, chillies are easy to grow all year round. And did you know there are thousand’s of varieties that you could be growing at home? Once you’ve got your haul, use it for chilli-infused olive oil, home-dried chilli flakes and a monstrously hot fresh chilli salsa. Watch out for the Naga Ghost Chilli, which measures over 1 million units on the scoville scale – twice as much as any other.

  1. Bird feed plate and bowl

Why not invite nature into your garden? A house share in the heart of London might not seem like the best place to bird watch, but if you create somewhere to feed they’ll come. Simply drill a hole in a plate and bowl, then attach them together to create a worderfully shaded feeder.
