According to our latest survey one in five Australians continue living together after a breakup for fear of not being able to afford to live separately.
Of the 1,000 people we spoke to, 35% of the people whose relationships had ended moved into flatshare accommodation because they considered it the cheapest way to live in their chosen area whilst 30% of the individuals who chose to stay in their homes rented out spare rooms, leaving a sentimental 18% continuing to live with their former partner because of the attachment to their home.
When one partner has moved out, taking in a lodger is often a good solution as it offers the opportunity to cover the costs of living in the house and can help with the feeling of loneliness that is often associated with a break-up.
On the other hand moving into a flatshare can offer an escape route and can be a haven for people who has split with their partners – it is also usually more affordable than renting alone, and can also allow new flatsharers the opportunity to meet new people and kick-start their social life.
